The Beginning of Shakespeare

Post about your experience with or expectations regarding Shakespeare.

So, I am starting Shakespeare this semester and to be honest, I am extremely excited. I have only read a couple of his plays, and want to read many more. In the past I have read Romeo and Juliet and King Lear for school, and have enjoyed both of those. This is really why I wanted to take Shakespeare. I love how he writes and describes different things. You just don't hear that sort of language anymore, and it's beautiful. I feel like writing nowadays is just to the point, and not particularly expressive. In the next few months, I want to be able to better understand the language more as I read, because oftentimes I will end up missing a joke or major detail because I get wrapped up in trying to decipher everything. Also, I feel like Shakespeare is referenced a lot in today's society and I want to be able to understand those references better. All in all, I believe this semester is going to be fantastic, and I am looking forward to learning more about Shakespeare! :)

  1. Yes, Shakespeare does have very beautiful passages of writing. Personally, it sometimes has made me wonder how things so beautiful and good (such as the "mercy" speech from Merchant of Venice) could have been written by the same guy who also illustrated many flaws in human nature (which, when acted out, are not at all beautiful, as in the case of Macbeth and Hamlet, which are unhappily bloody & violent).
